O.H. Stowe Elementary fourth graders travel to Austin on

an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fourth graders from Birdville ISD’s O.H. Stowe Elementary traveled to Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip January 5, 2018 to experience what they are learning in fourth grade Texas History. Students visited the Texas State Capitol and the Bullock Texas State History Museum.

During the charter bus ride to Austin, students discussed why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage and participated in activities and games in preparation for their visit. In Austin the students visited the Texas State Capitol where their legislators, The Honorable Kelly Hancock, State Senator, District 9 and The Honorable Stephanie Klick, State Representative, District 91, office. Students saw first-hand where Texas laws are made as they toured the State Capitol including the Senate and House of Representatives chambers. At the Bullock Texas State History Museum students explored exhibits about Texas’s earliest inhabitants, the Texas Revolution, and events that created our Lone Star identity. The students’ visit to the museum concluded at the multi-sensory Texas Spirit Theater with the Star of Destiny where they saw and experienced the history of our great state including a gusher exploding from an East Texas oil derrick and the takeoff of Saturn V as seen from Mission Control at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,”stated Lacey Phillips, Discover Texas Field Trips Director. “Student activities during the Discover Texas Field Trip to Austin reinforce and supplement fourth grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives with a focus on why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage.”

Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips make it easy for teachers to take their 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classrooms on organized, fun, and educational site-based learning experiences. Discover Texas Field Trip staff members handle all details, including round-trip charter bus transportation, reservations, and TEKS-based program curriculum, so participating teachers can focus on their students and making connections between the experience and what students are learning in the classroom.

In addition to Discover Texas Field Trips to Austin, San Antonio, Waco/Georgetown, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Education in Action also offers summer Lone Star Leadership Academy camps for outstanding 4th-8th graders. During the weeklong, overnight camps, participants experience significant Texas sites in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio, or Houston/Galveston with Texas educators and a focus on leadership.

Discover Texas Field Trips are presented by Education in Action, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to fostering educated and involved young people. For more information about Education in Action visit www.educationinaction.org and www.facebook.com/educationinaction

BISD Recognizes Board of Trustees

2017-18 Board Members from the BISD Board of Trustees picture

BISD Recognizes Board of Trustees

January is School Board Recognition Month and Birdville ISD is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools.

“School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child,” said Dr. Darrell G. Brown. In a climate of change and challenge, they develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students. They bear responsibility and oversight in Birdville for an annual budget of $240 million; more than 23,600 students, in grades pre-K to 12; more than 3,000 employees; and 33 campuses.

“Ensuring today’s students position themselves to excel with integrity in an ever-changing global society through innovation and responsive learning environments is a tremendous task. As elected officials, school board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interests of our children,” said Brown.

“We proudly salute these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of our community’s children and families,” said Brown. “These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future,” he said.

The men and women serving BISD are:

  •  Joe Tolbert, Board president, was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in 2006. He is married to Heather and has three childrenHunter, Sloane and Sophie. Tolbert is an attorney with Brackett & Ellis, P.C.
  •  Richard Davis, Board vice president, was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in 2006. Davis is married to Brenda, a retired BISD teacher. Davis is a 1974 graduate of Richland High School. Davis is the director of sales for Lift Aids, Inc.

Kunkel is a 1978 graduate of Haltom High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of North Texas. Kunkel has worked as an employee benefits consultant for more than 30 years.
  • Kelvin Dilks was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in May 2017. Dilks is a retired BISD teacher. He is a member of the Haltom City Lions Club; the Birdville Association of Retired School Personnel (BARSP,) where he is the third vice president; and is a director and actor with the Artisan Center Theatre.
  • Whitney Harding was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in May 2017. Harding is married to Michael and has two children, Casey and Callaway. She has been an active member of the BISD Education Foundation since 2011, and served as president from 2012–14. She is an Honorary Life Member of the Texas PTA. Harding is a private investigator with Wallace Investigations.
  • Jack McCarty was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in 2011. McCarty is married to Dana and has two children—Rebecca, a 2009 graduate of Birdville High, and Sara, a 2014 graduate of Birdville High. He attended Birdville schools and graduated from Richland High School in 1980, TCU in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and SMU in 1996 with an MBA. McCarty is a licensed CPA in the state of Texas and the chief operating officer for United Healthcare Student Resources.
  • Taylor Anderson was elected to the BISD Board of Trustees in 2016. Anderson is married to Nicole and has two children–Luke and Emma. He attended Birdville ISD schools and graduated from Richland High School in 2004. In 2008, he received a B.A. in political science from Texas Tech University and a J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in 2011. Anderson is an attorney for McAlister & Garcia.

“Great leadership always begins with a willing heart, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference. Please join us as we thank these local volunteer leaders for helping our kids soar to success.”

“Birdville continues to demonstrate true environmental leadership by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions that are proven to contribute to climate change,” stated Jean Lupinacci, ENERGY STAR Director for Commercial & Industrial Buildings. “Today, 45 percent of U.S. emissions are attributable to commercial and industrial buildings, which is why improving energy efficiency is so critical for our future.”

ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide, based on weather-normalized source energy use that takes into account occupancy, hours of operation, and other key metrics. ENERGY STAR is the only energy efficiency certification in the United States that is based on actual, verified energy performance.

On average, ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants use 35 percent less energy, cause 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate than their peers—all without sacrifices in performance or comfort.

To date, tens of thousands of buildings and plants across all fifty states have earned the ENERGY STAR certification. For more information about ENERGY STAR for Buildings and Plants, visit www.energystar.gov/buildings

The North Richland Hills Fire Education team worked with third-grade classes from each of the schools in North Richland Hills to help develop the Exit Drills In The Homes, also known as EDITH. A winner from each school was chosen and NRHFD team had the difficult task of narrowing down to the top three winners.

Congratulations to Debbie from IL Texas, Abby from Fort Worth Christian and Sterling from Green Valley!

Each student worked so hard on their designs and truly turned out incredible plans that can readily be used in their homes. If you haven’t made exit plans, now is the time! Practice the drill to make sure everyone knows their two ways out!

Animal Adventure Program Visits Richland Elementary

AT&T DONATES $50,000 to bring

Animal Adventures Program to

40 DFW-area schools

Program Empowers Students to Discover and Apply STEM-based Solutions to Wildlife Questions; Promotes Awareness of Careers in Animal Welfare and Conservation

Colorful birds, cuddly mammals and crawling reptiles visited with students at Richland Elementary recently for a 45-minute interactive learning event as AT&T and the Dallas Zoo continued a series of Animal Adventure visits to 40 DFW-area schools. The educational outreach effort is in its third year and is again funded by a $50,000 contribution from AT&T.

“The Animal Adventures Program brings the real world of animals directly to our students in school,” said Linda Caram, Regional Director, AT&T External Affairs. “AT&T is proud to support this program and partner with the Dallas Zoo to bring this wonderful educational experience to students throughout the area. Hands-on, interactive learning can inspire our students to discover the world and help them discover their own passions and interests.”

AT&T is the Presenting Sponsor of the program for the 2017−18 school year. Part of the Dallas Zoo’s education department, Animal Adventures empowers students to discover and apply STEM-based solutions to wildlife questions, learn about careers in animal welfare and conservation, and nurture appreciation of animals and their connections with nature.

Aligned with TEKS, Animal Adventures supports concepts learned in the classroom. Trained to deliver age-appropriate content and messaging, Dallas Zoo instructors share fun, science-based facts that spark interest and create a sense of wonder. They pair these details with fascinating live demonstrations, showing off the animals’ unique adaptations and behaviors necessary for survival in their native habitats. Instructors also address conservation success and action to ensure that future generations can enjoy wild things in wild places.

Dr. Darrell Brown, Birdville ISD superintendent, attended the event and praised school leaders and students for participating in the program, as well as the zoo and AT&T for working to bring this innovative program to local schools.

“Animals – from the soft and furry, to the cold and crawly – can hold a child’s focus and fire their imagination,” Brown said. “I applaud the Dallas Zoo and AT&T for their continued commitment to bringing this innovative program to students in Birdville ISD and across the metroplex.”

February 2018 Notes from Superintendent Dr. Darrell G. Brown

BISD Notes From ... BISD Superintendent Dr. Darrell G. Brown

This past week we witnessed another senseless shooting in the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Like each of you, I watched in disbelief with concern for the students, staff and families as the events of that day unfolded.

I want to take this opportunity to remind the BISD community that safety is my number one priority. If our students and staff do not feel safe, there will be little to no learning in our schools.

In the 2014 Bond, voters approved the addition of:

  • Security fencing around all of our elementary campuses;
  • Card readers on external doors which limit access to the buildings, and allow the District to keep campuses locked during the school day; and
  • Additional security cameras on every campus allowing the District and, if needed, law enforcement, the ability to see what is happening in every building.

In addition to these measures, BISD has an Emergency Management Team (EMT) that meets several times each year and conducts safety exercises. The EMT also completed an extensive three-day Incident Command Training during summer 2017.

Four times each year, Birdville ISD conducts a lockdown drill on each campus. (Safety drills began in the District 15 years ago.) Before the tragic shooting in Florida, BISD had a lockdown drill scheduled for the week of February 19. As we look for ways to continually improve our response in various emergency scenarios, the District does not typically announce these drills in advance. However, in light of last week’s events, we are announcing a lockdown drill on all BISD campuses on Thursday, Feb. 22 or Friday, Feb. 23. This will only be a drill.

In addition to added safety equipment, specialized training and safety drills, the District has other measures in place as part of our overall safety plan. However, it is not in the best interest of student and staff safety to share all safety measures with the public.

As parents, I want to assure you that BISD is taking measures to prevent a Parkland, Florida scenario on one of our campuses. However, no plan is foolproof. Therefore, I am asking for your help. Students, staff, parents and community members are asked to be observant in your surroundings. Look and listen, and if there are questions or concerns, notify the campus principal, local authorities or report them on BISD’s Tip Line. BISD provides a “Tip Line” on our mobile app and on all District and campus websites.

Thank you for joining me in keeping our children and schools safe.

Sincerely,

Darrell G. Brown, Ph.D.
Superintendent

Snow Heights Elementary fourth graders travel to San Antonio and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fourth graders from Birdville ISD’s Snow Heights Elementary traveled to San Antonio and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip February 16, 2018 to experience what they are learning in fourth grade Texas History. Students visited The Alamo, the Battle for Texas: The Experience Museum, and the Texas State Capitol.

During the charter bus ride to Austin, students discussed why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage and participated in activities and games in preparation for their visit. In San Antonio, students toured The Alamo, one of the most famous missions in the United States, and learned about the Battle of the Alamo’s role in the Texas Revolution. At the Battle for Texas: The Experience Museum, students explored exhibits about Texas’s earliest inhabitants and explorers, the Texas Revolution, and events that created our Lone Star identity.

In addition to Discover Texas Field Trips to San Antonio, Austin, Waco/Georgetown, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Education in Action also offers summer Lone Star Leadership Academy camps for outstanding 4th-8th graders.

For more information about Education in Action visit www.educationinaction.org and www.facebook.com/educationinaction.
