Smithfield Elementary Nominated for a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools Award

Smithfield Elementary is Nominated for a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase SchoolsTM Award

Smithfield Elementary has been nominated for a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase SchoolsTM award for the 20172018 school year by the Flippen Group. Two years ago, Smithfield’s administrators began an initiative to transform the campus into an emotionally safe and relationally connected place for students, staff, and parents to come together with a love for learning.

After researching programs used by many of the nation’s most successful schools, Smithfield chose to join hands with the Flippen Group to bring Capturing Kids’ Hearts® to its campus. Teachers and staff have continued to learn the processes needed to connect students with their peers and adults on campus and to create classrooms where students are excited to learn every day. As a result of implementing Capturing Kids’ Hearts, the school has experienced incredible results.

Over the next several months, a Flippen Group site team will visit Smithfield Elementary to observe the progress taking place and decide whether the campus qualifies to become a recipient of this year’s Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards.

Since 1990, campuses across the country have experienced amazing outcomes with Capturing Kids’ Hearts® tools and processes, creating the socio-emotional safety conducive to learning. Flippen Group provides educators the skills they need to change the trajectory of students’ lives. Openness replaces defensiveness. Judging and feelings of being judged are replaced with acceptance and real connectedness to the school. “Discipline problems nearly non-existent,” and “Academic achievement constantly improving,” are common feedback following Capturing Kids’ Hearts implementation.

Through the National Showcase Schools awards, Flippen Group seeks to recognize and celebrate schools that go the extra mile each day, building an environment where students and staff feel safe and connected. Flippen Group believes the unsung heroes who produce exemplary outcomes in schools and pave the way for other schools to follow need and deserve recognition for a job well done.

Capturing Kids’ Hearts campuses across the country are considered for this award based on the following criteria: 1) nomination based on observation, 2) level of implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes by all staff as measured by online surveys, and 3) data demonstrating that Capturing Kids’ Hearts has made a significant improvement in attendance, discipline, climate/culture, or academics.

Since the nomination period is now closed, Flippen Group teams will begin conducting site visits to nominated campuses to gather additional quantitative and qualitative data and interview students, teachers, administrators, and parents. They will compile a matrix of key measurements from the campus observation. Finally, they will conduct an additional survey to collect feedback regarding the perceived climate and culture of the campus and its conduciveness to learning. Following the site visit, the selection team will review all accumulated data and select the campuses to be this year’s recipients of the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards.

The Flippen Group is proud to recognize the outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the lives of our children. As they identify these outstanding schools, campus leaders, and teachers each year, please join in celebrating some of the most skilled and effective educators in the country!

Porter Elementary fifth-graders travel to Cameron Park Zoo, Waco Mammoth National Monument, and Inner Space Cavern on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fifth-graders from Birdville ISD’s Porter Elementary traveled to the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Waco Mammoth National Monument, and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip December 1, 2017 to experience what they are learning in science class.

At the Cameron Park Zoo, students explored the Brazos River Country exhibit, tracking the Brazos River from its source near Lubbock on to the Gulf of Mexico. Students investigated many animals living in the five ecological regions of Texas through which the Brazos River passes with a focus on each animal’s unique adaptations and ecological niche.

Next, the students experienced the nation’s first and only recorded discovery of a nursery herd of Pleistocene mammoths at Waco Mammoth National Monument. While viewing the in situ, sub-fossil remains of six Columbian mammoths and other Ice Age animals, the students learned about the Ice Age, how the fossils were discovered, sedimentary rocks, and why the site is one of the most important paleontological sites in North America.

Throughout the day, the students participated in numerous hands-on activities to learn about many of the Earth’s cycles, systems, and processes. Students learned about the water cycle, the environmental benefits of the world’s wetlands, and watersheds through participation in hands-on demonstrations. The student scientists discussed the rock cycle and worked in groups to classify rock, mineral, and fossil samples. At Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, students panned for, and identified, minerals found in the cavern. The students concluded their day by watching the Earth’s processes at work as they toured the highly decorated Inner Space Cavern.

“Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,”stated Lacey Phillips, Discover Texas Field Trips Director.“Student activities during this Discover Texas Field Trip reinforce and supplement fifth grade science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives in a fun, hands-on way that helps the students synthesize content taught in the classroom.”

Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips make it easy for teachers to take their 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classrooms on organized, fun, and educational site-based learning experiences. Discover Texas Field Trip staff members handle all details, including round-trip charter bus transportation, reservations, and TEKS-based program curriculum, so participating teachers can focus on their students and making connections between the experience and what students are learning in the classroom.

In addition to Discover Texas Field Trips to Austin, San Antonio, Waco/Georgetown, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Education in Action also offers summer Lone Star Leadership Academy camps for outstanding 4th-8th graders. During the weeklong, overnight camps, participants experience significant Texas sites in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio, or Houston/Galveston with Texas educators and a focus on leadership.

Discover Texas Field Trips are presented by Education in Action, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to fostering educated and involved young people. For more information about Education in Action visit www.educationinaction.org and www.facebook.com/educationinaction

Christmas time is special for the Carter family and the Ramblin Gamblers Motorcycle Club. Together, they help Santa deliver the Christmas spirit through the Randy Carter Memorial Christmas Ride. The Carter family created the Randy Carter Memorial Christmas Ride to honor their son and brother, Randy Carter. For years, Randy Carter dressed as Santa and along with his father and the Ramblin Gamblers Motorcycle Club delivered Christmas presents to families who were in need. Sadly, a drunk driver killed Randy in a motorcycle accident. To honor his memory, the Carter family continues his legacy through the Randy Carter Memorial Christmas Ride. This Christmas, they adopted 12 families from Watauga Elementary. On Dec. 9, a motorcycle riding Santa and his elves loaded up their motorcycles and delivered Christmas presents to Watauga Elementary families.

Teams from Birdville ISD’s North Ridge Elementary and the Academy at C.F. Thomas (ACFT) recently participated in the Grand Final of the 2017 Young Mathematicians’ Awards contest held inside the Microsoft Store at North Park Center. This event was sponsored by Explore Horizons. These teams represented two of the top five finalists. All participating teams were winners from the previous Regional level at one of the Explore Horizons centers. Each finalist team received a medal from Explore Horizons and a swag bag from Microsoft. The ACFT team won the Grand Final competition and received a trophy for their school, as well as awards for the individual team members. Teams in this competition are comprised of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students. Both Birdville ISD teams were composed of only fourth-graders. Following the competition, the judge for ACFT said, “I am beyond proud of these four young gentlemen and of the exceptional character of positivity and integrity they portrayed.” Alyssa Dunnahoo and Audra Garner were the teachers/sponsors for these two teams.

Birdville Foundation Supports Innovative Teacher Grants

Jan 16, 2018 11:47 am

Each year, the Birdville Education Foundation supports innovative teacher grants. Last spring, Deanna Rollett Gauby, a sixth- and seventh-grade science teacher at North Ridge Middle School received a grant for dissection equipment and frogs to dissect. Gauby recently wrote, “My seventh-grade classes recently completed the frog dissection, and it was a hit! I know that my students learned more from that one lab than they had from the weeks that we spent teaching the different body systems. It was a true “ah-ha” moment for most of my students, and it gave them an unprecedented insight into the human body system. I believe it took the material that we worked on and connected it to a real understanding. Thank you to the Foundation for making their learning come alive and investing in the future of our students.

To date, the Foundation has given over $1,474,195 in teacher grants since 2001.To learn more about the Foundation, click here.
