Congratulations to the 40 high school artists from BISD that traveled to San Antonio to compete in this year’s State VASE competition. These students’ 49 artworks advanced from the regional event with most receiving the highest rating possible from state adjudicators. Of the approximately 25,000 students that compete in the VASE competition each year, less than one percent receive the ultimate distinction of a Gold Seal Award for their artwork. BISD is proud to give special recognition to these high school artists who received a 2016 Gold Seal Award:

  • Macey Brown (Birdville High School 11th grade)
  • Kathleen Haklar (Richland High School 9th grade)
  • Helen Le (Richland High School 11th grade)
  • Lasamy Sarawichitr (Haltom High School 10th grade)
  • Meagan Watkins (Birdville High School 10th grade)

Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP): Seventh-Grade Talent Search

0305603

Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented students. Duke TIP works with students, their families, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential. Now in its 36th year, the seventh-grade talent search identifies bright seventh-graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates are invited to take the ACT or the SAT college entrance exams as seventh-graders, which allows them greater insight into their academic abilities. In addition, they gain valuable benefits and have access to unique resources for gifted students.

The following Birdville ISD students qualified for state recognition by scoring at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or the SAT.

  • Luis Gonzalez, Haltom Middle School
  • Joshua Grantham, North Richland Middle School
  • Erin Powell, North Richland Middle School
  • Mercedes Wacks, North Richland Middle School
  • Trayson Sosa, North Oaks Middle School
  • Fiona Burleson, Smithfield Middle School
  • Ethan Harrah, Smithfield Middle School
  • Kyle Nimon, Smithfield Middle School
  • William Thorne, Smithfield Middle School
  • Trinity Vaughn, Smithfield Middle School
  • Alexander Anderson, North Ridge Middle School
  • Jackson Keefe, North Ridge Middle School
  • Solyn Tidwell, North Ridge Middle School
  • Meredith Turner, North Ridge Middle School

The following Birdville ISD students scored high enough to qualify for grand recognition. Students who qualify at the grand level scored approximately at or better than 90 percent of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or the SAT. These students are invited to a special recognition ceremony at Duke University. Only about three percent of all the participants in the talent search qualify for grand recognition. This is quite an achievement!

  • Eva Kuderer, Smithfield Middle School
  • Kyle Settelmaier, Smithfield Middle School

teaw-listservbanner-revised-5-29-14_original

AUSTIN – Commissioner of Education Mike Morath announced today that the Texas Education Agency has designated 23 new Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(T-STEM) Academies for the 2016–2017 school year. With the addition of these 23 new campuses, Texas is now home to 121 state-designated T-STEM Academies.

T-STEM academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects, with a goal of increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. Designated T-STEM campuses serve students in grades 6–12 or 9–12.

“The continued growth of Texas STEM academies reflects a commitment to rigorous instruction in key subjects that challenges students while also preparing them for the future,” said Commissioner Morath. “A strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics prepares students for college, career or the military, which in turn strengthens our state’s economic future.”

The 23 campuses or charters designated as T-STEM Academies for the 2016–2017 school year are:

  •  Birdville ISD: Birdville Career and Technology Education
  •  Canutillo ISD: Canutillo High School
  •  Cedars International Academy: Cedars International Next Generation High School (Austin)
  •  Edcouch-Elsa ISD: EE-T-STEM Early College High School*
  •  Edinburg CISD (2): Economedes T-STEM Early College High School* and Edinburg Collegiate T-STEM Early College High School*
  •  El Paso ISD: Franklin High School
  • Greenville ISD: Greenville High School T-STEM Academy
  • Harmony Public Schools: Harmony School of Excellence (Austin)
  • Houston ISD: South Early College High School Advance Technology Institute
  • Humble ISD: Humble High School STEM Academy
  • Judson ISD: Karen Wagner T-STEM
  • Kingsville ISD:  H.M. King STEM Academy*
  • La Joya ISD (4): Academy of STEM at La Joya ISD at Juarez Lincoln High School; La Joya High School; Palmview High School Academies;
Thelma Salinas STEM Early College High School*
  • Lufkin ISD: Lufkin ISD T-STEM Academy
  • Mansfield ISD: Frontier High School
  • Salado ISD: Salado High School
  • Tekoa Academy: Tekoa Academy of Accelerated Studies STEM School (Port Arthur)
  • West ISD: West High School
  • Ysleta ISD: Ysleta High School Environmental Science and Engineering Academy

* Denotes campus with a state T-STEM and Early College High School designation

School districts or open-enrollment charters can apply each year for a campus to be awarded T-STEM designation (if certain criteria are met). Once a campus is designated, professional development and technical assistance are provided to designated T-STEM academies to serve as demonstration schools and learning labs. Designated academies showcase innovative instruction methods that integrate technology and engineering into science and mathematics instruction.

A complete list of designated T-STEM Academies in Texas can be found here: http://tea.texas.gov/T-STEM_schools.pdf. To learn more about T-STEM Academies, visit the Texas Education Agency website at http://tea.texas.gov/T-STEM/.

Texas Education Commissioner, Mark Morath, issued a statement regarding STAAR Reading and Math assessments for fifth- and eighth-grade students. Morath announced that the state will be removing student consequences attached to STAAR for fifth and eighth-grade students for the 2015–16 school year. He also cancelled the June 21–22 fifth- and eighth-grade retest administration.

> Read Commissioner Morath’s Statement

To support student learning, Birdville ISD will continue the accelerated instruction classes through June 22 for fifth- and eighth-grade students who passed all courses but did not pass the second administration of the STAAR Reading or Math assessments. The focus of the classes will be on individual learning plans designed to prepare students for the next grade level and beyond rather than on simply preparing them to pass a test.

Students who did not pass the second administration of STAAR Reading or Math assessments and also did not pass one or more courses will continue their learning at Haltom High School beginning Wednesday, June 15. They will conclude their learning on July 21. (The district is closed July 4–8.) Transportation is provided from the middle school campuses to Haltom High. Someone from the home campus will contact parents to set up a meeting to discuss academic progress and grade placement before the beginning of the school year.
