Francisco Elementary fifth-graders travel to Cameron Park Zoo, Waco Mammoth National Monument, and Inner Space Cavern on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fifth graders from Birdville ISD ISD’s Francisco Elementary traveled to the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Waco Mammoth National Monument, and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip March 2, 2018 to experience what they are learning in science class.

At the Cameron Park Zoo, students explored the Brazos River Country exhibit, tracking the Brazos River from its source near Lubbock on to the Gulf of Mexico. Students investigated many animals living in the five ecological regions of Texas through which the Brazos River passes with a focus on each animal’s unique adaptations and ecological niche.

Next, the students experienced the nation’s first and only recorded discovery of a nursery herd of Pleistocene mammoths at Waco Mammoth National Monument. While viewing the in situ, sub-fossil remains of six Columbian mammoths and other Ice Age animals, the students learned about the Ice Age, how the fossils were discovered, sedimentary rocks, and why the site is one of the most important paleontological sites in North America.

Throughout the day, the students participated in numerous hands-on activities to learn about many of the Earth’s cycles, systems, and processes. Students learned about the water cycle, the environmental benefits of the world’s wetlands, and watersheds through participation in hands-on demonstrations. The student scientists discussed the rock cycle and worked in groups to classify rock, mineral, and fossil samples. At Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, students panned for, and identified, minerals found in the cavern. The students concluded their day by watching the Earth’s processes at work as they toured the highly decorated Inner Space Cavern.

“Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,”stated Lacey Phillips, Discover Texas Field Trips Director. “Student activities during this Discover Texas Field Trip reinforce and supplement fifth grade science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives in a fun, hands-on way that helps the students synthesize content taught in the classroom.”

Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips make it easy for teachers to take their 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classrooms on organized, fun, and educational site-based learning experiences. Discover Texas Field Trip staff members handle all details, including round-trip charter bus transportation, reservations, and TEKS-based program curriculum, so participating teachers can focus on their students and making connections between the experience and what students are learning in the classroom.

In addition to Discover Texas Field Trips to Austin, San Antonio, Waco/Georgetown, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Education in Action also offers summer Lone Star Leadership Academy camps for outstanding 4th-8th graders. During the weeklong, overnight camps, participants experience significant Texas sites in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio, or Houston/Galveston with Texas educators and a focus on leadership.

Academy at C. F. Thomas fourth-graders travel to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fourth graders from Birdville ISD’s Academy at C. F. Thomas Elementary traveled to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip May 16, 2018 to experience what they are learning in fourth grade Texas History. Students visited the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum and the Texas State Capitol and took part in “The Legends of Texas: The Experience”.

During the charter bus ride, students discussed why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage and participated in activities and games in preparation for their day. At the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, students learned the history of the Texas Rangers and explored exhibits about Texas’s earliest inhabitants and its many unique geographical regions. They then traveled to Austin to see the Texas State Capitol where their legislators, The Honorable Kelly Hancock, State Senator, District 9 and The Honorable Stephanie Klick, State Representative, District 91, office. Students saw first-hand where Texas laws are made as they toured the State Capitol including the Senate and House of Representatives chambers. The students then stepped back in time to life in the 1800s in Texas at historic Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms Living History Museum with programming presented by Battle for Texas: The Experience. During this unique program designed exclusively for Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trip participants, students experienced life on actual homesteads from the 1820s-1860s, a musket-firing demonstration, an engaging Texas Revolution skit, and an interactive and up close look at rare Texas Revolution artifacts. In addition, students met a Texas settler and heard his stories and perspective about the Texas Revolution.

“Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,” stated Lacey Phillips, Discover Texas Field Trips Director. “Student activities during the Discover Texas Field Trip to Austin reinforce and supplement fourth grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives with a focus on why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage.”

Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips make it easy for teachers to take their 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classrooms on organized, fun, and educational site-based learning experiences. Local Student Honored for Exceptional Academic Success

Mason Moody, a seventh-grade student from Watauga Middle School, is among the students being honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) for their exceptional scores on the SAT. He was recognized at a ceremony at Texas Christian University on May 14, 2018.

Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students across the United States who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above-level college-entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. Duke TIP then hosts annual recognition ceremonies to honor the seventh graders who scored the highest on these ACT or SAT exams.

“We are extremely proud to recognize our remarkably talented students who have demonstrated key aspects of their academic potential by achieving scores on the ACT or SAT commensurate with half of all college-bound high school seniors,” says Shawna Young, Executive Director of Duke TIP. “As an alum of our 7th Grade Talent Search, I still remember how it felt to be recognized by Duke and TIP in seventh grade, as well as my excitement and anxiety at taking the SAT at such a young age. As an organization, we cherish the opportunity to celebrate each of our ceremonies honorees for such an outstanding accomplishment.”

Working with host academic institutions, Duke TIP sponsors thirty-six ceremonies in sixteen states throughout April, May, and June. Speakers include university administrators and professors from the host institutions, state and government officials, and accomplished former Duke TIP students. For a complete list of ceremony locations, dates, and times, please see Duke TIP’s State Ceremony schedule. For more information on the 7th Grade Talent Search, as well as Duke TIP’s 4th–6th Grade Talent Search for younger students, please visitwww.tip.duke.edu.

FORT WORTH STUDENTS SHOW LASER FOCUS AT 2018 STATE STEM COMPETITION

(Anna, TX) – What could you do with a bakery box, a laser beam, six lenses and an hour? Students from across Texas were presented with this challenge on Saturday, April 28th, as part of the 33rd annual TAME State STEM Competition, sponsored by Raytheon and held at the YMCA Collin County Adventure Camp in Anna, Texas. Students used the supplies to focus and diffuse a laser beam during the Engineering Design Challenge segment of the competition.

The State STEM Competition is an annual event organized by the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME), a statewide non-profit organization committed to preparing Texas students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). TAME’s annual State STEM Competition is the focus of a year of intense preparation for Texas students in TAME clubs around the state. TAME students from grades 6-12 qualified to attend the event at one of 14 Divisional STEM Competitions.

This year’s competition brought 299 Texas to Anna to test their skills in math, science, and engineering. After spending the morning taking individual math and science tests, students came together in groups combining schools and grade levels to practice their collaborative problem solving skills over the Engineering Design Challenge.

In his morning address to students, State Senator Van Taylor highlighted the importance of STEM education at both an individual and a community level. An afternoon appearance by Raytheon executive and former astronaut Robert Curbeam had students asking questions about space travel and life on the International Space Station.

Melissa Cortez, an 8th grade student at Smylie Wilson Middle School in TAME’s Lubbock Chapter, emphasized the impact that participation in the event can have on students: “Being part of TAME and the STEM Competition, it’s just riveting. I’m very excited to meet new people, to explore new options, to see what my life could be outside of Lubbock. I am just so happy to be here. I’ve met so many wonderful people. I know that if I can do anything here, I can do anything anywhere else.”

The top six students in each test and the top six teams in the Engineering Design Challenge were recognized with awards and medals. In addition, three teams received special awards for creativity, teamwork, and innovation. The Texas Board of Professional Engineers sponsored the Innovation Award.

Ivye Arioja Dolino, a senior from Presidio High School in TAME’s West Texas Chapter, designed the winning artwork for the event shirts and programs. Ivye plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin this fall.

TAME’s Outstanding Senior Award, sponsored by Shell Oil Company, was presented to Brisa Diaz, a high school senior from Everman Joe C. Bean High School in TAME’s Dallas Chapter. Brisa plans to attend The University of Texas at Arlington and pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering this fall.

The STEM Competitions, part of TAME’s multi-pronged STEM engagement strategy, celebrate diversity and achievement in STEM and encourage the development of a peer and mentor network. Thanks to the support of a number of sponsors, gratefully acknowledged below, the events are offered free of charge to all participants.

We are thrilled to announce that 24 students from the Fort Worth Chapter competed in the event.

The following students placed in the competition:

  • Granbury Middle School Rebecca Valentine – 6th Place in the Engineering Design Challenge
  • Haltom High School Cecilia Romero – 4th Place in 9th Grade Science, 5th Place in the Engineering Design Challenge Sorin Pena – 6th Place in 12th Grade Science
  • Haltom Middle School Chloe Guerrero – 5th Place in 8th Grade Math, 6th Place in 8th Grade Science

Smithfield Elementary fourth-graders travel to Cameron Park Zoo and Inner Space Cavern on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fourth graders from Birdville ISD’s Smithfield Elementary traveled to the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip May 10, 2018 to experience what they are learning in science class.

At Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, the students participated in numerous hands-on activities to learn about many of the Earth’s cycles, systems, and processes. Students learned about the water cycle, the environmental benefits of the world’s wetlands, and watersheds through participation in hands-on demonstrations. The student scientists discussed the rock cycle and worked in groups to classify rock, mineral, and fossil samples. The students had fun panning for, and identifying, minerals found in the cavern and concluded their day by watching the Earth’s processes at work as they toured the highly decorated Inner Space Cavern.

“Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trips are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,” stated Lacey Phillips, Discover Texas Field Trips Director.

Discover Texas Field Trips are presented by Education in Action, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to fostering educated and involved young people. For more information about Education in Action visit www.educationinaction.org and www.facebook.com/educationinaction.

North Ridge Middle School Student Recognized by SBOE

SBOE Student Heroes Award recognizes acts of kindness and compassion

AUSTIN – Though this is a time when the world’s attention is appropriately focused on ways to stop random acts of violence against our children at school, the State Board of Education (SBOE) is honoring 15 public school students who have demonstrated inspiring acts of kindness and compassion.

The students range from a first-grade student to high school seniors. Their good deeds include blanket drives, raising funds to provide free chemotherapy treatments, and launching efforts to make sure no child eats lunch isolated and alone.

These students are recipients of the 2018 Student Heroes Award. One recipient is selected per State Board district. Local ceremonies are being held to present the award to each student, who receives a plaque and certificate.

“This award reminds us that a good and caring nature most represents our Texas children. These award recipients saw a need and committed to bold action on behalf of others, often engaging their fellow classmates in the effort. They each in their own way have made a profound difference. Their schools and communities are better for their work,” said Donna Bahorich, chair of the State Board of Education.

From District 11: Ella Pursley, a student at North Ridge Middle School in Birdville ISD; has provided more than 700 hours of community service over the past five years. She has worked with The Birthday Party Project to host more than 100 birthday parties for children living in homeless shelters. She has worked with The Miss Sweetheart Special Needs Pageant, assisting special-needs children backstage and then escorting them on stage. Pursley has also raised money for the Special Olympics.

West Birdville Elementary fourth-graders travel to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip

Fourth-graders from Birdville ISD’s West Birdville Elementary traveled to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip May 29, 2018, to experience what they are learning in fourth grade Texas History.

The students then stepped back in time to live in the 1800s in Texas at historic Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms Living History Museum with programming presented by Battle for Texas: The Experience. During this unique program designed exclusively for Education in Action’s Discover Texas Field Trip participants, students experienced life on actual homesteads from the 1820s-1860s, a musket-firing demonstration, an engaging Texas Revolution skit, and an interactive and up-close look at rare Texas Revolution artifacts.

AUSTIN – Though this is a time when the world’s attention is appropriately focused on ways to stop random acts of violence against our children at school, the State Board of Education today is honoring 15 public school students who have demonstrated inspiring acts of kindness and compassion.

Below are their stories.

District 1: Impacted by a suicide in her own family, Mayely Carrasco, a sophomore at Odessa High School in the Ector County Independent School District (ISD), wanted to make sure that no student struggled alone with depression. She created a suicide prevention group that meets weekly. The group provides support and encouragement to classmates. Carrasco also helped make a video to educate students and staff about teen suicide and provides informational material about community resources.

District 2: Horacio Garcia-Rojas, a junior at IDEA McAllen College Preparatory School, led an effort that resulted in the funding of 23,000 free chemotherapy treatments. He raised the funds through a program called “Caps for Chemo”. For every 1,000 bottle caps collected, a cancer patient is provided a free chemo treatment. During his sophomore and junior years, Garcia-Rojas collected 23 million caps.

District 3:  As part of aclass assignment, Crystal Pacheco, a first-grade student at Monte Cristo Elementary School in Edinburg Consolidated ISD, was asked to write a letter containing her Christmas wishes. Pacheco asked for a ball for her brothers, food for the family, and a blanket for a brother who had been hospitalized. She asked for nothing for herself. Pacheco’s unselfish letter launched a blanket drive that ultimately raised more than 1,500 blankets, enough to provide two blankets to every child at her school.

District 4: Caleb Elam, a junior at Furr High School in Houston ISD, has a big heart that has led to his involvement with nearly a dozen community service projects. He’s helped feed homeless teenagers, tutored an elementary school student as well as high school students, organized games at the Boys and Girls Harbor, and served as a volunteer helper at Houston’s Children Museum, just to name a few of his activities.

District 5:  As a fifth-grade student, Samantha Sanchez was moved to make fleece blankets for homeless children. By seventh-grade, she founded a non-profit foundation called “Sam’s Covers” to do this work on a bigger scale. Today, as a sophomore at Ronald Reagan High School in North East ISD, Sanchez and her foundation have delivered 1,600 blankets to those in need.

District 6: Hannah Keller, a junior at Stratford High School in Spring Branch ISD, noticed that her school had a large number of refugees and she began stopping by an English as a Second Language class to help. She helped the students with their homework and organized outings to football games and school plays to help the new students get oriented to their American school. Keller has now created the One World Club that brings students together through projects such as potluck dinners, volunteering at a retirement home, and collecting Halloween costumes for young children.

District 7: Callie Jourdan, a senior at Port Neches-Groves High School in Port Neches ISD, is a long-time Red Cross volunteer who exhibited leadership and a calm demeanor as she helped staff the Port Arthur Civic Center, which served as a shelter after Hurricane Harvey hit the coast. She helped the evacuees get settled, played games with their children, served food, and helped in any way needed – often while standing in three feet of water as the shelter itself took on water. Jourdan also helped with the Home Fire Campaign, which was aimed at reducing fatalities during residential fires.

District 8: As a military dependent who moved frequently, Kathryn Fouch, now a sixth-grade student of Pecan Trail Intermediate School in College Station ISD, knows how hard it can be to make new friends. So she took it upon herself to create the No One Sits Alone Initiative that makes sure no student eats by himself or herself at lunch. This simple concept produces powerful outcomes that help all students feel included and appreciated.

District 9: Damiano “D.J.” Sanders, a fifth-grade student at Raguet Elementary School in Nacogdoches ISD, takes care of others in need, whether it is carrying their books, giving them a pat on the back, or providing encouragement. His caring nature has allowed him to mentor other students and help them through difficult times.

District 10: As an eighth-grade student, Lance White, was diagnosed with cancer. The Make-A-Wish Foundation offered to make his dreams come true. Instead of wishing for a trip of a lifetime, White, now a junior at Cedar Park High School in Leander ISD, asked for help creating a charity and the Lift Brigade was born. The Lift Brigade provides support for pediatric cancer patients and their families.

District 11: Ella Pursley, a student at North Ridge Middle School in Birdville ISD; has provided more than 700 hours of community service over the past five years. She has worked with The Birthday Party Project to host more than 100 birthday parties for children living in homeless shelters. She has worked with The Miss Sweetheart Special Needs Pageant, assisting special-needs children back stage and then escorting them on stage. Pursley has also raised money for the Special Olympics.

District 12: Braden Munn, a senior at Highland Park High School in Highland Park ISD, heads the school’s Community Service Council. He coordinates events and serves as an ambassador to the school, community and Parent Teacher Association. He has provided 150 hours of community service while in high school, serving as a camp counselor for freshman orientation, working at Vacation Bible School, and tutoring underclassmen in math.

District 13: Eghosa Egbenoma, a sophomore at James Bowie High School in Arlington ISD, has volunteered in every aspect of the DFW Metroplex Toys for Tots program for the past four years. He spends 80 hours a year or more on the project. It is estimated that more than 200,000 needy children have benefitted from Egbenoma’s work.

District 14: While only a third-grade student, Blake Travis launched a toy drive to benefit children who were hospitalized during Christmas at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The first year, Travis, who has been a patient at TSRHC himself, collected 1,000 toys. Now in 2018 as a fifth-grade student at Dagan Elementary School in Lewisville ISD, Travis collected more than 2,000 toys.

District 15: Tinsley Drake is a fourth-grade student at Jose S. Ramirez Elementary School in Lubbock ISD where she is already known as an activist. She handcrafts jewelry that she sells to raise funds to support Open Door, a charity that assists homeless people in her school’s neighborhood. She calls this project “Tinsley’s Hope.”  Through her Destination Imagination team, she has also raised nearly $2,000 for the Lubbock Make-A-Wish Foundation.
