Lockdown Drill Planned

Sep 12, 2017 08:16 am

share on Twitter Like Lockdown Drill Planned on Facebook

In order to check Birdville ISD’s emergency systems, the District will conduct a districtwide lockdown drill this week. When the drill begins on the campus, an announcement will be made on all District phones indicating BISD is going into a lockdown. At the same time, all doors will be locked and closed.

As part of the drill, BISD will use the District’s mobile app to notify parents when the drill begins and ends. Birdville’s mobile app is available for free in the Apple and Google stores.

In a real emergency, a lockdown means students and staff will remain in their locked classrooms until the police give the ALL CLEAR. During a lockdown, no one is allowed in or out of the secured building.

———————————————-

Smithfield Elementary named 2017 National Blue Ribbon School #BISDShines

Sep 28, 2017 12:29 pm

share on Twitter Like Smithfield Elementary named 2017 National Blue Ribbon School #BISDShines on Facebook

Congratulations Smithfield Elementary School

On Thursday, September 28, 2017 U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized 342 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2017 based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Smithfield Elementary, in Birdville ISD, was one of 18 elementary campuses in Texas that received this prestigious recognition.

National Blue Ribbon Schools demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels. The Department will formally recognize the 292 public and 50 private schools at an awards ceremony at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C. on November 6 and 7, 2017. The 2017 cohort represents public and non-public elementary, middle and high schools, including traditional, charter, magnet schools, parochial and independent schools in 44 states, the District of Colombia and Department of Defense Education Activity schools in Okinawa, Japan; Stuttgart, Germany; and West Point, New York.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The National Blue Ribbon Schools flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. National Blue Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and a model for schools still striving for excellence. Now in its 35th year, the U.S. Department of Education has bestowed this coveted award on more than 8,500 schools.

Seven BISD Students Receive National Recognition

National Merit Scholarship Program Logo

BISD is proud to announce it has two National Merit Semifinalists and five National Merit Commended Scholars for the 2017–18 school year. Nearly 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program last year by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors received the prestigious designation of becoming a semifinalist this year. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Congratulations Ged Kates, Richland High School head football coach, on being chosen as one of the two “Hometown Hero” Key Influencers to ride with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels – planned for Wednesday, Oct. 25.

2017 Bell Helicopter Fort Worth Alliance Air Show

U.S. Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron

HOMETOWN HERO RIDER NOMINEE BIO – GED KATES

Coach Ged Kates is in his 19th year in coaching and teaching. He is a proud Richland Alum. He came to home to RHS after completing two years as the Head Football Coach at Fort Worth Arlington Heights High School.

He has spent time coaching at Grand Prairie High School, Euless Trinity High, and Richland High School. Coach Kates is a graduate of Texas A&M University, and earned his Master of Education from Texas Woman’s University.

He has been married to Melissa, an attorney, for 16 years and they are proud parents of three sons. Drew is 10, Brett is 8, and Clay is 6. He sees coaching as a calling, and helping young people grow in character, in the classroom, and athletically. Over the years he has mentored young men that have contributed to society in all occupations and community involvement. He has coached men that are now physicians, attorneys, business owners, community leaders in school districts and at the city level, and most importantly, good husbands and fathers.

In 2016, Richland football set a school record with 10 victories, and won its first playoff victory since 1984. While this is noteworthy, it is only a small part of the football program. Richland Football gives back to the community by adopting families at Christmas, providing scholarships for outgoing athletes to further their education, and hosted a SafeHaven event for abused women and children. Currently, they are planning on visiting Cook Children’s Hospital to spread holiday cheer to those that are fighting illness.

Ged Kates is honored and humbled to be nominated for the possibility of flying with this great organization.
