Porter Students Exemplify BISD’s C.O.R.E. Values

CORE

Third-grade students at Porter Elementary recently sponsored a service project for the whole school. From Jan. 11–22, they collected coins from students, staff, and community members. Their goal was to raise $2,016 for Shields Elementary in Red Oak, a librarian at Pearson Elementary in Garland ISD, and several families, all of which were impacted by the December tornados. So far, the campus has raised more than $2,931. Assistant Principal Chad Paris agreed to allow students to duct tape him to the wall if they met their goal. Since the school exceeded the goal, he is going to be duct taped to the cafeteria wall, most likely wearing princess attire.

Porter students exemplify BISD’s C.O.R.E. values of responsibility, empathy, kindness, honesty, acceptance, and courage.

The SkillsUSA student organization at the Birdville Center of Technology and Advanced Learning (BCTAL) has a team competing in the SkillsUSA American Spirit contest. As part of the contest, team members went to North Richland and North Ridge middle schools and Smithfield Elementary to work with students. At North Richland Middle, they talked to seventh- and eighth-grade students about the opportunities available to students at the BCTAL. They also went to Smithfield Elementary and North Ridge Middle School to help write letters to soldiers overseas. The team’s goals were to promote Career and Technology Education programs available for BISD students and show patriotism and citizenship by supporting our military. (Students from Birdville and Richland high schools helped with these projects.)

American Spirit team members are cosmetology students Victoria Navarro, Skylar Brimberry and Ariana Aquino.

Two Birdville ISD eighth-grade social studies teachers have been accepted to attend a week of learning at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. Elizabeth Cumbie, an eighth-grade teacher at Watauga Middle School, and Mickie Siek, an eighth-grade teacher at North Richland Middle School, were invited to be part of a small group of social studies teachers from across Texas to go to Mount Vernon during spring break. They will attend a week-long exploration of new ways to teach the Constitution, in alignment with our Texas standards. Both were part of a rigorous selection process, which included an essay explaining how George Washington and the 18th-century world is relevant to their teaching, their personal teaching philosophy, and how they can use what they learn to engage and impact their students.

Cumbie will be using her class social media accounts (Instagram: WMSHistory) to engage and interact with students while attending the training.

The Birdville Center of Technology and Advanced Learning’s (BCTAL) robotics team recently advanced to the Regional competition. On Feb. 13, the robotics team won the Vex Robotics Competition in Cumby, Texas. The win qualifies them for the Regional competition and a competition in Iowa in April. (A first or second place finish in one of these will secure them a place at the Vex World Robotics event.) The robot was built entirely by BCTAL students. The robotics team has been working on their current robot since summer 2015. The event in Cumby included 25 teams from Keller, Sachse, Tyler, Diana, Como, Bonham, Wolfe City, Royce City, Paris and Cumby. The Vex Robotics Competition is the first event win for sponsor Matthew Pitner. Pitner is the BCTAL’s 2016 Campus Teacher of the Year.

March 2016 Notes from Superintendent, Dr. Darrell Brown

NotesFrom

It is hard to believe there are only three months left in the 2015–16 school year. A lot has happened since school began on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015. Students and staff continue to achieve great things, both academically and personally.

I hope you will join me in telling others Birdville ISD’s focus is excellence, integrity and service. The District has created the social media campaign #WeAreBirdvilleISD for the purpose of sharing the pride of BISD.

Listed below are a few of the points of pride that illustrate why #WeAreBirdvilleISD.

  • BISD has three National Merit Finalists, 13 National Merit Commended Scholars and one National Hispanic Scholar for the 2015–16 school year.
  • BISD was named a finalist for the $5 million Raise Your Hand Texas Blended Learning Initiative.
  • Sixteen BISD high school band and choir members were selected as Texas All-State musicians.
  • Smithfield Middle School was named to the 2016 Texas Schools to Watch® program by the Texas Middle School Association.
  • The Birdville Center of Technology and Advanced Learning’s (BCTAL) robotics team recently advanced to the Regional competition.
  • Two Birdville ISD eighth-grade social studies teachers were accepted to attend a week of learning at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home.
  • Birdville ISD’s Audio/Video Production Department announced that Birdville High School senior Ian Chapoy’s short film “The Ambition Song” was accepted into the Texas High School Shorts Program at the 2016 South by Southwest Film Festival.
  • Hafsa Syed from North Ridge Middle School won BISD’s 2016 Spelling Bee. Adriana Fackender from Holiday Heights Elementary was the runner-up.
  • Richland Elementary’s choir was the only BISD choir invited to perform with the North Texas Children’s Choir at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
  • Six BISD aspiring middle school and high school playwrights were named winners of the Stage West Theatre’s Neighborhood Play Contest.
  • Binion and Smithfield elementary schools tied for first place in BISD’s 2016 Battle of the Books competition.
  • BISD celebrated with a groundbreaking for the new North Richland Middle School campus on Jan. 15. Thank you BISD voters for your support of the 2014 Bond.

This list might seem long, but it doesn’t begin to touch on all of the accolades I could share about our students, staff and community.

I want to invite you to join me in showing your BISD pride by posting your pictures on social media with a sign or caption containing the hashtag #WeAreBirdvilleISD. Show the world why they should want to be part of the great things happening in Birdville ISD.
