At a special meeting on Monday, June 12, Birdville ISD’s Board of Trustees announced the appointments of Amy Newland as principal of John D. Spicer Elementary, Dr. Cheryl Waddell as principal at Jack C. Binion Elementary, and David Williams as principal at the Birdville Center of Technology and Advanced Learning. Newland is replacing Dr. Waddell, who was named principal at Binion Elementary. Waddell is replacing Donald Bartlett, who has accepted a position in another district. Williams is replacing Mark McCanlies, who recently announced his retirement from BISD after 35 years.  

Amy Newland has been the assistant principal at Mullendore Elementary since 2022. Before then, she was an assistant principal at Spicer Elementary from 2019–22, assistant principal at Francisco Elementary from 2015–2019, and a third and fifth grade teacher at Smithfield Elementary from 2001–15. 

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M–Commerce and master’s degree from Lamar University.  

Dr. Cheryl Waddell has been principal at Spicer Elementary since 2010. Prior to Spicer, she was an assistant principal at the Academy at C.F. Thomas from 2007–10; taught fourth grade at Walker Creek Elementary from 2005–07; and fourth grade at Smithfield Elementary from 2002–05. 

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University, master’s degree from Dallas Baptist University, and doctorate degree from Walden University. 

Williams has been principal at Shannon High School (SHS) since 2016. Prior to SHS, he was principal at Crandall High School in Crandall ISD from 2013–16; principal at Crandall Middle School from 2012–13; assistant principal at Highland Park High School from 2004–12; assistant principal at Westwood High School in Round Rock ISD from 2001–04; and a teacher at LC Anderson High School in Austin ISD from 1996–01. 

He earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin and master’s degree from Southwest Texas State University.
